revriley said: Quite true. The government is in as much of a crisis as the people are during civil wars. You know, I've always wondered how the headcanon that nations have to do what their bosses say worked. Why is it so? When did it start? The best guess I have is that since the people generally follow the boss, the nations do to. They do what their boss says because their people do. (Which leads to more confusion and problems during the civil war).

I think it stems from the idea that a nation has to be passive in the affairs of a government because government arises from the people + nobody would be really willing to be giving full power to an entity who probably fights itself on the bigger issues.

I’m trying to remember if there are fics about a nation going against their government, but I don’t think I’ve read about that. A nation is living on a dichotomy of ideals (take whatever issue/idea and you can find as many people supporting it as people hating it) and they,  at best, guides its leader by giving him pointers about the population’s feeling on an issue. But I really, really can’t see it being active. It doesn’t mean that they can’t disagree with their leaders though.

Civil Wars are always one of the most interesting scenarii, since it implies that the difference in ideals are so far apart that they cannot be reconciled by negotiating with the other party. What happens to the nation then? Does it have a double that represents the other side? Are they rendered unable to act or think?

You also have to take in account that an embodiment of a population, such as current nations are, is actually a powerful tool to have as a politician. Simply to go out in the street with them by your side would imply that they are on your side, i.e you are right against your adversaries. If you stretch that idea (and also the idea that humanity is the worst enemy humans have), it wouldn’t be surprising if a power hungry man restrained a nation’s movement and speech to the strict necessary. And after having been subjected to that once or twice, nations simply give up on intervening because humans are humans and never change.

revriley said: My own thoughts on the civil war thing is that the nation has an internal crisis--a personality disorder. Since the nation represents the people, not the government, I imagine he/she can't cope with the two+ feuding sides and stay sane. At one point the nation may support one side and in the next the other. I imagine they can barely function during these times, and pose a huge danger to themselves and those around them. They are struggling to stay in control of their mind and body.

Eh, you have to remember that the government still represents part of the people, however unfairly it was put in power (because, well, it is still advantageous to the people who are in it), so a country still represents the government in some form.

I mostly agree with your headcanon :)

I didn’t feel the need to detail that, but yep!

I always thought of him in a kind of grey zone, but you’re right, I did (Told you I’d forget someone ey).

Hey!

I had trouble with that at first too, but then I started getting interested in those countries specifically, which helps a lot! The Hetalia Wiki helps a lot on this for a quick search about a character.

After that, I think fanart and fanfics help too, since people usually group characters together according to their canon interaction.

Off of my head (and I’m surely going to forget some), the siblings are:
- Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg
- Both Italys
- Canada, USA
- Ukraine, Russia, Belarus
- Hong Kong may or may not be related to China.
- Liechtenstein is Switzerland’s adopted sis.
- Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia are sibs.
- Something something about Denmark, Norway and Iceland.
- Germany and Prussia are siblings.
- Wy and Australia
- Sealand and England????

Headcanon wise, I think that most considers Australia, NZ, US and Canada to be related in some way because of their past with England. Portugal and Spain are probably siblings, South America countries are probably related to each others.

I think it’s fair game to assume that nations who have shared the same roots for a while may be related to each others, but you can or you can not make that assumption: interpretation & the use of history makes pretty much everything possible.

Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia aren’t actually siblings.

Only Norway and Iceland are brothers, Denmark is not.

Actually correct information, thanks!

Hasn’t Denmark joked about Iceland calling him big bro though? I think that’s where my confusion come from.

Hey there, I hope you have a great day!

Favourite nordic is probably Denmark. Ally is France (hahahahahaha <insert patria jokes>) and Axis would be Italy (both).

Haha thanks! I hope you have a lovely day!

I’m hijacking this ask (sorry!) because I feel like there’s a sudden fresh wave of people coming in the fandom, so I’ll do this real quick.

Please do check and follow the Hetalia Archives (from the Hetalia wiki) and the Hetalia File Archive (from the file archive). Both are more up-to-date than I could ever be and are life saviours when it comes to questions I’m confused about.

Even though livejournal is not popular as it were, the hetalia community is still very much active. However, it requires you to join it in order to be able to posts or view some posts. Here’s a How-To guide made by HFA.

And if you’re looking for pairing or character specific content (or simply more active than I can find the time for), Hetalia Archives has a fairly long lists of hetalia related tumblrs here

If you didn’t know of HA or HFA, please go follow them both, because they are completely worth it and are led by really nice and thoughtful people.

artistic-old-soul said: Hi I'm new in the Hetalia fandom and I wanted to know what is the difference between Hetalia: Axis Powers and Hetalia: Beautiful World. Also if I have to see one of them first to understand the other ? Another thing is how many seasons each one has?

Hello there! Welcome to this large fandom haha.

So anime-wise, Hetalia is animated and owned by Studio Deen iirc. The seasons order are: Axis powers (2 seasons), then World Series (2 too), Beautiful World (only one).

You don’t necessarily need to watch one season to get the other (I..think? Correct me if I’m wrong, it’s been a looong while) but it’s better to get through them in the correct order anyway, if only to have a constant art style /opening/ending for 2 seasons. The renaming here is mostly to point out a change of animation director and staff, I don’t think there’s real in-anime continuity.

Again, I can be wrong, so feel free to correct me guys.
